Our class is taught by three long-time students of Sensei Herb Olayvar.

Mr. Don Snyder

Mr. Snyder has been studying the martial arts since 1981.  Studying both Kokushinkai and Shorin-Ryu at the same time, Mr. Snyder eventually chose Shorin-Ryu for its simplicity and effectiveness.

Shorin-Ryu, a "soft" style art, has been the focal point of Mr. Snyder's life for over 22 years.

Working his way through the ranks, Mr. Snyder was awarded his first degree (Shodan) black belt in 1992.  His second degree (Nidan) came four years later in 1996.

Under the guidance of Sensei Herb Olayvar, Mr. Snyder also studied forms of Kenpo.  With an emphasis on strong-side forward thinking, this martial art is closely related to Shorin-Ryu with both having originated in Okinawa.

While the emphasis of the classroom teaching focuses on kata taken from Shorin-Ryu, some Kenpo is practiced to enhance and further the education of the students.

Mr. Snyder has been working for the past 10 years at a membership discount warehouse in Carlsbad.

Mr. Lee Steitz

Mr. Steitz has studied Shorin-Ryu Okinawan karate for over ten years.  He earned his Shodan in 1996 and his Nidan in 2001.  He previously studied Tae Kwon Do and Jeet Kune Do for several years.

Mr. Steitz began his training in high school where he competed in wrestling.  Upon graduation, he attended college for one year and then enlisted in the United States Army where he served three years on active duty and two years in the active reserve component.  While in the Army, Mr. Steitz received standard military training in hand-to-hand combat.

Upon his honorable discharge from the Army, Mr. Steitz became a civilian police officer.  He has been a police officer for the past twenty-one years in the Southern California area and has worked as an arrest & control instructor for the past fourteen years.  He has served as his department's Defensive Tactics Program Coordinator for the past seven years.

In addition to defensive tactics, Mr. Steitz is also a certified police baton instructor.  He taught both baton and arrest & control at a basic police recruit training academy for over six years, and earned a Master Instructor certificate from the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) in 1999.

As a student of Sensei Olayvar, Mr. Steitz has also received training in Kenpo and a variety of weapons.
