San Luis Rey Okinawan Karate-do offers
instruction for adults and kids in Shorin-Ryu Matsumura Orthodox Okinawan karate. The class was started over 30 years
ago by Sensei Herb Olayvar, and continues today in the same area of Oceanside, California.
Following Sensei Olayvar's retirement in 1996, the class was taken over by
Mr. Doug Parish, one of Sensei Olayvar's first Black Belt students. Sensei Parish continued teaching the class until
April 2003, when he moved from the area. The class is now taught by Mr. Don Snyder, Mr. Lee Steitz, and Mr. Justin
Moe, all of whom are Black Belts under Sensei Olayvar.
The dojo of San Luis Rey Okinawan Karate-do is located in the San Luis Rey
Resource Center, which is operated by the Housing Department of the City of Oceanside, California. The class is offered
at no cost to residents in the Back Gate area of Oceanside. In lieu of tuition, students must provide their own Gi.
